In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Become More Familiar with the Holy Qur’an (for 10 to 16 years old)

The Holy Quran has 114 parts which we call those parts Surahs. Each Surah is made of some verses which we name Ayah.

Whenever an ayah (verse) was revealed, the Holy Prophet would ask Imam Ali [AS] to write it down. The whole of the Quran was compiled into a book during the time of the Prophet. Many people also memorized it. Let’s learn about some Surahs:

Surah al-Fatiha

Also called Surah Hamd. It is the first Surah of the Holy Quran. We recite this Surah in every salat, every day.

This Surah has seven ayahs (verses).

We are taught through its verses to glorify Allah with His praise, to pledge that we worship and serve only Him and seek His help. He is the Master of the Day of Judgement, the Lord of the Worlds. We ask for guidance to the Straight path, the path of those who have been given favours; away from those who have gone astray.

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

Al-hamdu lillahi Rabb il-'alamin

Ar-Rahman ir-Raheem

Maliki yawmi-d-Deen

Iyya-ka na'budu wa iyya-ka nasta'in

Ihdina-s-sirat al-mustaqim

Sirat al-ladhina an'amta 'alai-him

Ghair il-Maghdubi 'alai-him wa la-d-dallin

Surah al-Baqrah

Surah Baqarah is the longest Quranic Surah with 286 ayahs. Verse 255 known as Ayatul Kursi tell us of the Might and Power of Allah. We recite them to ask for His protection.

Ayatul Kursi:

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

Allahu la ilaha illa huwal-Haiyul Qaiyum

La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm

Lahu ma fi-s-samawati wa ma fil-'ard

Man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnihi

Ya'lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum

Wa la yuhituna bi shai'in min 'ilmihi illa bima sha'a Allah

Wasi'a kursiyuhu-s-samawati wal ard

Wa la ya'uduhu hifdhuhuma

Wa Huwal 'Aliyul-Adheem

Surah al-Asr

This Surah has three ayahs. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq [AS] said that the word Asr (time) stands for the Twelfth Imam Mahdi [AS]. Only those who benefit from the teachings of the Mahdi [AS] and do good deeds will be guided. Others who reject him and the Holy Prophet, are at a loss.

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

Wal 'asr

Innal insana lafi khusr

Illal ladheena amanoo wa 'amilu-s-salihati wa tawasaw bil haq; wa tawasaw bis-sabr

Surah al-Kawthar:

It is the shortest Surah in the Quran. Kawthar stands for Sayyedah Fatimah [AS]. The Holy Prophet [PBUH] was taunted by his enemies that he had no one to inherit him. Allah promises him abundant blessings through his daughter Fatimah [AS].

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

Inna a'taina kal-kawthar

Fasali li rabbika wanhar

Inna shani'aka huwal abtar

Surah al-Tawhid:

Also called Surah Ikhlas, has four ayahs. This Surah is about the Oneness of Allah. Reading this Surah is like reading a third of the Quran.

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

Qul Huwal-llahu Ahad

Allahu-s-Samad

Lam yalid wa lam yulad

Wa lam yakul-lahoo kufuwan Ahad

Surah al-Qadr:

This Surah has five ayahs. It speaks about the Night of Destiny which the Holy Quran was sent down in it to the Holy Prophet. Allah sends down Angels on this Night to the Imam of the time with His Orders.

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

Inna anzalnahu fi lailatil Qadr

Wa ma adraka ma lailatul Qadr

Lailatul Qadri khairum min alfi shahr

Tanaz zalul-mala’ikatu war roohu fiha bi idhni-rab bihim min kulli amr

Salamun hiya hatta matla'il-fajr
