In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Become More Familiar with the Holy Qur’an (for 10 to 16 years old)
The Holy Quran has 114 parts which we call those parts Surahs. Each Surah is made of some verses which we name Ayah.
Whenever an ayah (verse) was revealed, the Holy Prophet would ask Imam Ali [AS] to write it down. The whole of the Quran was compiled into a book during the time of the Prophet. Many people also memorized it. Let’s learn about some Surahs:
Surah al-Fatiha
Also called Surah Hamd. It is the first Surah of the Holy Quran. We recite this Surah in every salat, every day.
This Surah has seven ayahs (verses).
We are taught through its verses to glorify Allah with His praise, to pledge that we worship and serve only Him and seek His help. He is the Master of the Day of Judgement, the Lord of the Worlds. We ask for guidance to the Straight path, the path of those who have been given favours; away from those who have gone astray.

Surah al-Baqrah

Wa la ya'uduhu hifdhuhuma
Wa Huwal 'Aliyul-Adheem
Surah al-Asr
This Surah has three ayahs. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq [AS] said that the word Asr (time) stands for the Twelfth Imam Mahdi [AS]. Only those who benefit from the teachings of the Mahdi [AS] and do good deeds will be guided. Others who reject him and the Holy Prophet, are at a loss.

Surah al-Kawthar:
It is the shortest Surah in the Quran. Kawthar stands for Sayyedah Fatimah [AS]. The Holy Prophet [PBUH] was taunted by his enemies that he had no one to inherit him. Allah promises him abundant blessings through his daughter Fatimah [AS].
